Color Me Unimpressed: Two Horse Tack Review

But so pretty?
I somehow missed the bus on Two Horse Tack Reviews--I know other bloggers got free things and I so wish I did. But I didn't. So rest assured, this is a not-for-compensation completely honest post. Well, I write those anyways, but here goes.

After seeing some reviews floating around the blogosphere, I got interested in Two Horse Tack. They purported to provide high quality beta biothane tack in vibrant colors. I specfically wanted a grooming halter--I clip a lot of horses in the winter and an adjustable grooming halter that is easy to both clean and recognize would be fantastic. I went to the website to place my order.

I thought the price was a little high at $28 + $6 shipping for a single grooming halter that went in a flat rate envelope, but hey, I wanted the product and I could definitely justify the cost/benefit ratio because I could also clip client horses in it. I checked their product sizing guide and found it rather user-unfriendly. They prefer you don't measure and just want you to go by company guidelines.

Um, ok.

As if
Courage wears cob size in literally everything I have ever bought him, so I ordered cob. He's not even "big cob size" or "small cob size". He's just totally average cob size.

And then I waited. It took it's time getting to me--I guess not unusual for a semi-custom item and I have no idea what their wait list is like. When it finally came, I took it out to the barn to try on Courage.

Yeah... never going to fit. That was it's largest adjustment and it wasn't any closer to fitting on Prisoner, who is a chiseled 15.2 and even smaller than Courage.

Out of curiosity, we ended up putting it on Pandora, Alyssa's 13 hand Quarter pony, and it did fit on her on the largest hole.

So....

Obviously, not going to work.

I immediately contacted Two Horse Tack via email.

And if the headstall goes up, the nose might not fit.
SIX DAYS LATER, they saw fit to respond, if not to answer any of my questions about, you know, sizing, exchanging, and a potential return. All I got was a link to their returns and exchanges page, which basically says "you're f*****".

Again, I replied promptly to try and at least get an answer to what size I should have ordered in the first place. I mean, if cob is this tiny, does my cob size horse actually need oversize? Are there measurements or something I can check?

**crickets**

I finally (more days later) get an email with a 20% off code, which means I could reorder the same product in what may or may not be the correct size and still pay full shipping. It would cost me $30 on top of the $34 I'd already spent and I had no reason to believe that the sizing would be any better and no comparison of any kind that made sense. One data point can't be extrapolated. Plus, the service rep was still not answering any useful questions or even referring me to someone who could. Nothing.

Needless to say, I decided to cut my losses. It really is a nice product and I wish it had worked, but the customer service was useless and at that rate, I was looking at what would be a minimum $64 grooming halter and more likely a $94 halter if the next size I chose at random didn't work.

As such, unless you already have a piece of their equipment to get sizes from, I wouldn't buy from Two Horse Tack. It's not that the product is so bad--it's that the sizing makes no sense and the customer service is that bad. There's no way around it.

  1. Thank you for your review! I was going to buy a buckle nose halter from them (I LOVE buckle nose halters--once you use one you will not want to use any other type of halter). I needed one for my daughter's pony who is definitely not a pony size but is more like a cob size. I was wondering whether their cob size would run small or big (or should I order the large pony size???) but without any actual measurements on their site I was wary of ordering. I know that I can have them custom make the halter at no extra charge but I was worried about the return policy. . .(I guess I didn't have to worry about that--based on your experience there is no return policy!)

And now, thanks to your warning (ummm. . ."review")--I will NOT be ordering from them. I'm sorry that you wasted money but thank you for saving me some money!

    1. I placed an order with Two Horse Tack for a leather halter. I never heard back from them for over a month and it never arrived, so I canceled the order, I thought. After I canceled it and bought another halter, the Two Horse Tack halter arrived. Crappy leather and it does not fit. There is no way to get a hold of them. So I am stuck.

    2. Two years after you post...i did not research company, but messaged on face book...they seemed great...SEEMED!
3 people company. Owner, operater ( wbo lives in different state!!), and accountant. I think this company orders the products from china and pretents to make them here.
Hope you got you money back.i will contact bbb and use face book to tell people.

  2. I am not a fan of colored or non-leather tack, so I've never paid much attention to the Two Horse Tack stuff. That absolutely sucks that their customer service is so rotten. If they treat everyone like that they won't be around long! Hopefully you can sell the stupid thing to someone in blog land with a very small pony.

  3. Booo them! I love the color, and idea for a grooming halter, but so not worth the hassle they put you through! :(

  4. I did consider this product and like Courage, my horse is a solid cob in all bridle brands, but he's a horse size in most halters. So I would be CLUELESS about which size to buy without measurements. Heck, I even got it wrong with measurements when I CUSTOM ordered a halter from Quillin last year, but they absolutely took it back, no questions asked! That's just too bad about the service/sizing. It is pretty and useful.

  5. What a disaster. How unfortunate that they (a) don't have a better exchange policy especially since they don't have proper measurements on their site and (b) horrible customer service.

  6. Oh that sucks because it does look like a really lovely halter!! Companies really need to do better with their customer service because the best advertising is word of mouth- or the best way to run people off!

  7. That really sucks. I am not sure if it is one lady that runs the whole thing or what, but I was contacted by them to do a review and a couple giveaways. I really did like the halter bridle they sent me, it came very fast, too. Shy is cob sized and that fit really well on her. However, getting in contact with them, even through the email they sent me to use, has been sporadic. I sent them all the info they needed for my first winner, it took a week for them to get back to me. Then there was an issue with the second winner as well. The return time for emails is so so slow. She wanted to do another giveaway with me, I have been waiting weeks for the stuff back from her. I chose not to pursue it any further. I do really like their product, but you are right, the customer service is awful.

    1. See, and that makes me wonder if the sizing is even consistent. Courage is the cob sizing-ist of all the cob size horses and it wouldn't go on him for anything. That plus the lack of any sort of a size chart is just weird.

It's too bad. I really would like a halter, but it's just not worth it.

  8. They contacted me a ways back and wanted me to be one of their reviewers. I looked at the product, didn't like any of what I saw, and never wrote them back!

  9. Oh no! I am sorry it didn't work out for you! I ordered Horse Size for B, which they say "Fits most Horses 14.2 -16 hands" and it fit fine. They describe their Cob Size as being "For Horses 14 -15 hands and who are small in stature" so, yeah, it is a bit confusing that is for sure; B is usually Cob Size in other brands but not here. Very disappointing they would not offer you an exchange!

  10. Pretty halter but doesn't seem worth the pain!

  11. Yikes!!! I'm very glad I read this before I tried ordering anything from them. I wanted to try the beta biothane because it would be easy to clean and doesn't matter if it gets wet, but I've held off because I didn't know anyone who had actually ordered from them. Thank you for being honest and letting us know!

  12. I also have dealt with their lack of customer service. First I ordered a "demo" horse halter to check fit. it would just barely not fit my 16.2 H horse so I returned it and ordered a warmblood which is the next size up. However it was very tight on the last hole but it is supposed to fit 16-17 H horses. After lots of emails/FB they are supposed to send me a new longer crown piece. However, I still have not received the credit for returning the "demo" halter. I am going to have to dispute the charge with my credit card company even though the return delivery was confirmed by the post office. This is a shame as I like their product.

  14. Thanks for the review. I could have written it. I ordered a large pony size leather bridle for my 13.2 paint, it was too small. Can't contact by phone, and they will not email a reply for an exchange.

  15. I wish I had seen your review before I ordered a bridle. It also was too small, their policy is still the same. I'm burnt and they still suck!

  17. I wish I'd seen this too! There was a recommendation on Mule Girls facebook group and mule headstalls are hard to find. They sent an absurdly sized crownpiece and browband - it would barely fit over my cat's head. No response after sending it back immediately by priority mail for a refund. Considering reporting them to PayPal.

  18. I ordered a horse size picnic bridle for my 15.2 hh horse. It is way too small and I got the basic run around the above poster did. Thankfully it barely fits on the last hole once I removed the brow band. I also don't like how wonky the bridle is. It constantly slipping apart and the reins have zero grip. They are about like trying to hold into a wet piece of soap.

  19. I just ordered a snap on bridle from Two Horse Tack and had the same experience. Ordered Arab size because that is what I've always ordered and fit my Arab. He is swimming in it. When I contacted her immediately and all I got was a link to order another brow band! I'm pretty sure the brow band that is on this bridle would fit my friends Huge Standardbred! Beyond ticked off! Now she's playing "I'm not answering the emails game".

  20. I ordered on 9/26/17 and have yet to see anything show up. I have tried contacting them several times and get no response. I am attempting once more today and then will have PayPal resolution try to help out.
I do not recommend this company at all.

  21. I've ordered several halters and a couple bridles over the years from them. Always very pretty, but the sizing is inconsistent. Always ordered cob size for my arabs. They all fit, but some were on the larger size, some smaller. I got an Andalusian (definitely not a dainty head) so I ordered a horse size halter. It was ridiculously large. Rather then email, I called, talked to a gal that was very friendly and they fixed the problem pretty quickly. I really like their products and unlike some other reviews, I had recieved them quickly. However, hesitant about using them anymore cause of constant size inconsistencies.

  22. Such a shame. I ordered the black lunging cavesson before I read these reviews. It fits perfectly, I love it, and the biothane is very soft, pliable and smooth. I liked it so well, I was considering a headstall for a little S hackamore. Wanting this same type of biothane since typicially biothane is stiff and has a texture. The return email was slow and weird - didn't answer the question of how to order custom if needed for little S. Referred me back to website for a bitless bridle. So weird in fact, I figured I'd better pass on ordering anything else, especially custom. Glad I passed after reading these comments.
