Sympathy

We all know I'll spend money on Courage without so much as the drop of a hat. Tack, blankets, bodywork, random herbal shit when I'm hormonal, basically anything I think might make his life 0.1% better, he gets.
spoiled and he knows it

He gets bodywork a lot. His bodywork lady always says 24 hours off, which I meticulously count off. If he gets worked on 3pm Saturday, I'm in the saddle 3.15pm Sunday. Plus I always call him a persnickety pain pussy because he's so reactive about the process that clearly makes him feel better. C'mon dumbass. Show a little gratitude, amiright?
trying to figure out where to bite her

Cough.

At this point, I should possibly mention that never in my life have I had any form of massage, chiropractic adjustment, or physical therapy. Other than a myofascial release class through pilates here and there, I haven't bothered to spend that money on me.

But in the aftermath of the car accident, I finally did get a massage because I hurt so much.

Ummmmm yeah have any of you ever had one?

DEAR GOD THEY HURT SO MUCH.

And then not only do they hurt in the moment, they hurt hella more later.
pets don't mind. pets just cuddle.

So uh.

From here on out when poor C gets bodywork, he's also getting AT LEAST a full day off (maybe a week) and an entire bowl of bute.

THE POOR HORSE OMG.

  1. yeah massages aren't that fun. I had a sports massage once and it hurt so bad I thought I might throw up.... felt great later though!!

  2. Yeah massages and chiropractic adjustments and PT aren't fun. Taran is useless for two full days after his massages, and I completely understand why.

    Feel better soon!

    1. It's a whole new level of understanding here. Yikes.

  3. I actually felt that way about massages until I met someone who gives massages that don't hurt! I believe it's some kind of trigger point massage and acupressure she does. I literally feel so loose and relaxed after and not sore. I have gone out and ridden within an hour after a massage and they are always great rides because I'm so loose and relaxed. It might get uncomfortable sometimes (like those knots under my shoulder blades) but I never get that feeling like I wish it would stop or I have to hold my breath like I did with others. I'd recommend trying other providers.
On another note I keep wanting to get certified in equine massage because I find it so interesting - maybe someday!

    1. There's a part of me that would really love to learn how to do all this, but that's a huge undertaking.

  4. I might be one of the few that thoroughly enjoys getting massages, and I always ask the therapist to "dig" to really work the tightness out of my muscles. It kinda hurts while it's happening, but I always feel SO MUCH BETTER after it's over. I would recommend drinking lots and lots of water...seriously, drink enough water that you almost feel like you might drown. The water helps move the lactic acid around and flush it out; buildup of lactic acid sitting in your muscles is why you're sore in the first place.

    1. It's super annoying to have to pee every 10 minutes but yeah, that's what I did.

    1. I mean, I definitely feel better now so it's worth it, but I had no idea what I was getting in to.

  7. The first time I ever went to my physiotherapist he worked on me and was like, you might wanna go home and soak in an Epsom salt bath cause you're gonna be sore. I was sore for a WEEK. Like crippled. And then, I felt a lot better. And the next time he did it, same thing, but I felt better in a shorter amount of time. Now when I go, I feel great afterwards - he worked through all of my layers of pain that have formed over the years and now it's back to some sort of equilibrium. But, I do go every 2-3 weeks on the dot, or else I know I'll go back to a tight bundle of muscles again.

    1. Haha yeah as I recall, you had a lot to work through. Seems to have turned out well for you!

  8. I did a deep tissue sports massage once and thought I was going to die. Never again, I'll just be stiff, thanks.

    1. I'm weird about strangers (or anyone, ever) touching me so I don't think it's going to be a regular thing.

  9. Lol! Yep! I have a knot under my shoulder blades that can get so crazy I'll start holding one shoulder higher than the other. Not so great when riding the sensitive pony! ;)

The hurt reminds me of being really sore from working out. When you think about how they're breaking down muscle tissue, that makes a lot of sense. It's like a really intense workout! Drink your water, kid!

    1. I always hold one shoulder higher than the other. And my shoulders were a mess. Huh.

  10. My chiro/accupuncture vet always asks for 48 hours off, so that is the time gauge I use. I've used that for muscle work as well (which we tend to not do, since the results from the accu are much easier to measure).

  11. I clearly need to get a massage so I can feel what pony is feeling. I'm sure I'll be fine JUST FINE. Mine is a real pain princess.

    1. Well I never said C wasn't a pain princess, because he is, but I have to admit there is something to his complaints now.

  12. I much prefer the relaxation massages at the salon. Rehab massages are evil. Also evil: joint injections. I can't believe there are vets out there who tell you to ride after 24 hours. They've clearly never had it done to themselves!

    1. I'm pretty sure my vet says 3 days stall rest and then walk-only for a week on the joint injections. Haven't done them for a while. I never really thought about that side of it though, yikes.

  13. I'm not a fan of massages even when I manage to get past the whole stranger touching me thing. But I never thought about it making Stinker sore. I always follow instructions and give him the recommended time off and he is always super sassy. Maybe I'll give him an extra day off next time and see what he destroys...I mean feels like

    1. Is super sassy a different level of sassy than normal? :p

    2. Yes yes it is.... he brings all new levels of sass. Pretty sure he starts a super sassy for a normal horse and it is an exponential curve from there ;)

  14. I used to get regular sport massages when I was doing martial arts (and didn't have to pay for my horse to get massages). Holy hell did I hate that woman, but I always felt so much better afterward. She was great, dialed it in to my level of tolerance for pain and made a real change in my flexibility, but it was not the highlight of my day.

    1. This is just one of those things I seriously never considered. I just assumed a massage was like petting a dog or something I guess. My bad.

  15. I think you need more. All the massages! If I have to get tortured by the chiropractor, you can be tortured with massage. Do it.

    1. Now I have to decide if I want to risk the chiropractor too. ACK.

  16. PT massages hurt, but they do help so much. I will say my PT and my masseuse usually advises me to get out and get moving by the next day so things don't get locked up.

  17. OMG this is hysterical. Not that you are in pain. Just that you finally had a massage. And yeah, they do hurt. My muscles are sore for at leat 24 hours!

  18. Awww, feel better!! I do think it's a little funny that Courage is so reactive because my absolute baby of a mare that can handle absolutely no discomfort, none. LOVES her massages and will fall asleep and/or indicate to the massage lady exactly where she wants to be poked next.

  19. As others have said it can be really painful or really relaxing. It ALL depends on who is doing it and their technique. I'm going for a 90 minute, deep tissue massage on Saturday. Hopefully I can find another guy like the last one I had in Az/Hell. He could work out ALL the knots in one shot and while yes, some of them were major and hurt a Lot, once he was done-I felt SOOOO much better. The first one left me feeling really trippy like I was on a strange high of some kind because of all of the toxins being released. That was bizarre!

When you're so tense and the muscles in your neck are so tight you have nauseating headaches every day and can't turn your head much at all, a massage can bring much needed relief and you look forward to them. Welcome to my world.

  20. I prefer my foam roller - I can hurt/massage myself a little every day. It can't tell me which muscles to stretch like my sports masseuse can, though!

  21. Just catching up on blogs again, and sorry about the car accident. =-/ Glad it wasn't worse at least.
