Teach Me Tuesday: Your Tack Area

mmmm bridles
The one unifying theme of horse people is that we acquire a lot of stuff. I have stuff in my car, in my house, in my garage, and at least one barn. Ok fine two. Possibly three.

Stop judging me.

At the barn, I keep a trunk (that desperately needs to be reorganized), plus a couple of saddle racks and bridle hooks. The racks just hang on a peg board and aren't cool, but I like to customize my trunk with stickers that make me seem cooler than I really am.

It's an inexpensive and simple way to express myself and it makes me smile every time I see it.

How do you organize/customize your tack area? Any good tips?

  1. I throw all our crap in a 12x12 tackroom. Thank goodness it's just us because we a) have way too much crap (who needs 7 saddles for 2 horses? I mean really?) and b) I never seem to get around to cleaning/organizing it. I can't even imagine keeping my stuff in a normal tackroom at a normal barn. The BO would hate me.

    1. I can rival that with 6 saddles for 2 horses... 3 English, 3 western... You just never know???

  2. I have four saddles and no horse but unlimited access to a tack room and tack that I get to treat as my own.

And my own means it is a disorganized mess that never gets cleaned. I was better at cleaning tack when I had a horse but it was still a disorganized mess.

  3. I hear you on multiple places your tack is stored. Since I have horses at home and a horse boarded my stuff is scattered about. I have a lovely tack locker at the barn and then I have two tack trunks at home along with my horse trailer tack room. I definitely use the horse trailer tack room but it's very poor winter storage as it gets very damp.

  4. I share a small tack room (think like 10x10ish) with one other rider. It's heaven. We both have space for a large tack trunk, 2 saddle racks, 1 boot rack, 1 bridle hook, and 4+ other hooks. The room is rounded out with a chest of drawers that we use for saddle pads/boots/polos/first aid stuff/clippers/etc. Plus whip holders. And another set of hooks for lead ropes and lunge lines. I keep my grooming kit and bathing stuff stashed under my saddle racks, but everything else is hung or put away neatly in it's spot. I LOVE OUR TACK ROOM SO MUCH.

  5. My stuff is kind of everywhere. I have a 12x12 tack room, plus a cabinet between my cross ties, plus I have a saddle stand in the back of one cross tie (I never tie them correctly, I just hook them to one tie and leave them in the center of the barn because I can. ha. I have the exact same Stanley trunk as you do with some stickers, though I've always kept it in my dad's house (on the farm) with all my show stuff in it that is meant to stay "clean."

  6. I technically *have* a tack room at our house but mostly I use it as a feed room and storage shed. All of my tack - including 3 saddles, god knows how many bridles, 2 harnesses, about 15 blankets, I have no idea how many saddle pads, buckets, boots, polos, bells, etc etc etc - lives in my trailer tack room. Did I mention It's a 2 horse BP? Not a lot of wigge room in there.
But, whenever I trailer anywhere I have EVERYTHING already in there - and never can make the mistake of forgetting anything at home. So that's a plus!

  7. Things that I use a lot get kept in my mud room. Things that I don't use, but might use someday, are hanging in the living room (I've convinced my husband that they're "decor"). Things that I don't use and will probably never ever use again, but I can't get rid of because I might need them someday and I know that day will be the day after I got rid of them are stored in the basement. I also have an assorted collection of girths, saddle pads and random parts living in the trailer because those things get forgotten or break. And, of course, on any given day tack can be found spread out all over the property between the barns, trailer, arena, and house.

In short, no, there is no organization or system.

  8. I put up a picture of Rob Schneider as his character from the Waterboy (in meme format) saying "YOU CAN DO IT!!"

  9. i recognize that sticker!! but yea my tack area isn't the most organized either. i'm set up in a corner - convenient for just dumping stuff lol. and have a set of drawers instead of a trunk. and not nearly enough hooks... never enough hooks!

  10. A corner of the house has been made into a tack corner. Because I am an inconvenient mix of OCD and permanently in a hurry, everything has its place in a complex set of bins and drawers, but in those drawers chaos reigns. Also I think I have bandages, bits and boots scattered all over the country in my wake. I'm sure some of my stuff also actually belongs to my trainer, but neither of us have any idea which. It just kind of gets shuttled off to whoever needs it.

  11. I have a personal tack locker that's big enough for one saddle rack, four bridle/halter hooks (used for bridle, lunge line, and helmet bag), a couple small shelves (used for miscellaneous extra grooming and care supplies), a couple extra wall hooks (one is used for my L'il Dude stirrups for the kiddos), and whatever else I can cram in around the grain can (currently just first aid kit and grooming box). Then I have a second saddle rack in the community tack shed, and sometimes I borrow a bridle hook in there because it's warmer than my locker. The rest is either somewhere in my car or garage, unless I can convince my husband that really the garage is too cold so they should live in (and take over) our bedroom closet instead.

  12. We have 2 tack rooms and a horse trailer tack room (where we keep some stuff like my endurance saddle). And yet we still have a saddle sitting on a dining room chair and a girth hanging in the spare bedroom closet. I bring stuff home to sell, get annoyed that eBay wants my bank account info and then never sell it and it just lives with us. So I have no advice because I can't even organize my tack with 2/3 tack rooms.

  13. I currently have tack in different grocery store tote bags around my house and car, so I'm not exactly a role model in this area.

  14. Two words. Horse trailer. Some things are intentionally placed, other stuff is thrown in helter skelter. depends on the tack and the day.

  15. I need to organize myself better. I have a huge tack locker but somehow everything ends up in my damn car.

  16. Half my tack is permanently living in my boot, 'coz no tack locker/trunk/room to store it in, so it has to stay there so that when I go see my horse, I have our stuff. The other half is somewhat organized in the shed. But since I bought another saddle (dressage), it's a bit hard to fit two saddles in my boot! I need to find a way to sort it out better. :/

  17. I am an organizing freak. I have 6 bridle hooks, 3 saddle racks, a small tack box, an extra grooming tote and two plastic 3-drawer organizers... and that's just in the barn!
