Teach Me Tuesday: Horse Tattoos

As good horse owners, I'm sure y'all immediately thought of this when I said "horse tattoo":

But that's actually not what I meant. I had someone ask me where I'd get a tattoo once, and the question baffled me. I've never had one, never thought about it, and never had an answer. I've since come up with a (purely hypothetical) idea, but haven't the foggiest clue about where I'd put it.

it was 9f and i forgot to take a pic for y'all, ok?
But it got me thinking. I know some of you have really cool tattoos to commemorate your equine beasties and I bet even more of you have cool ideas about how to do it when/if you get around to it.

So what's the scoop on equine tattoos? Who, when, how, where?

  1. I would never get a tattoo but I've often thought about it. If I did, it would be in a relatively intimate place that would only be seen if I undressed/wore a bikini, and it would be small. I thought of tattooing Fiction's race tattoo on me, as I like how personal it is.

  2. Ha I totally thought of TB tattoos! I have one non-horse-related tattoo, but I am planning on getting another of the GRP brand in the future. I just need to decide where/how big/what sort of style I want. I think it will be a pretty and understated tribute to my Dino!

  3. Hah hah yes, I was thinking this had something to do with what is the struggle to look up OTTB tattoos! I've never really thought about tattoos, I really like the water color style, but not sure how I would incorporate a horse with that or where I would put it.

  4. I don't have any, but I went to college (equine studies major) with a girl who got two giant hoofprints tattooed on each, um, cheek. To make it look like she got kicked in the...y'know. And she'd pull her pants down at every opportunity to show you.

    1. Fact: People with butt tattoos will drop their pants with absolutely no warning to show you their tattoo.

  5. I'm of no help here - don't have one, wouldn't get one (but I do *love* some that other people have!)

  6. I've thought about it, but never gone through with it. Lately I'm kind of digging the wrist tattoos. I saw one of a small horseshoe on the side of someone's wrist and I really liked that.

  7. I have a snaffle bit "bracelet" looking tattoo on my ankle!

  8. I have two horse shoes with a cross thru them tattooed on my right back shoulder - my daughter and I got matching ones done on her 18th birthday. Plan to have another one done soon - 3 horses running, probably on my side - to symbolize Riva, Cheers, and Hennessy (my daughter's deceased TB).

  9. I have one! It is between my shoulder blades so hard to get picure of. But I love it. Then again I love tattoos. ..

Here is mine, essentially, mine is not black ink but in a brown red henna color that is starting to look slightly purple (10 years later. .) http://www.tolkienshop.com/contents/media/l_3021.jpg

  10. I also have one between my shoulder blades, just above my bra strap. It says "Love Laugh Ride" and is book-ended by a jumping silhouette and a dressage silhouette.

  11. i've got a smattering of them but nothing horsey.

  12. I have a small hoofprint on my wrist that I got for my horse Grady. I wanted something I would be able to see since I have a non-horsey tattoo on my ankle that I always forget is there.

  13. I don't have any and an unlikely to get any. They're permanent, and all that. I hate that I got my ears pierced at age 10 so who knows what I would think 14 years from now about a permanent body marking I got now.

I like the look of some of them though. If I was to get one it would be somewhere I could see it (don't understand the point of tattoos I couldn't see) and probably small like a horseshoe.

The ear piercing thing is mainly because they never healed right and still get infected even though I haven't worn earrings in years. I don't just randomly hate shiny ear baubles or something weird like that.

  14. I totally went to lip tattoos too. :) Even though I have two of my own!

I have in mind either Apollo's lip tattoo or a lyre over my heart, someday. Matt really, really objects to the idea of me tattooing a number on my body, so even though that would be my slight preference, I'm willing to go with the lyre.

  15. I want/wanted one for Rico. I'm not sure if I'll ever go through with it. First, what I want changes, but it's almost always something white ink and small on my wrist. I wouldn't regret any of the ideas I have had, but I also think up new, better ideas pretty regularly. Second, I'd want to do it right and get someone really good to do it, which means that it will be expensive, and I can't bring myself to spend that kind of money when there are other things that are more pressing right now. Maybe one day... or not. I'm clearly not that motivated!

I love seeing other peoples' tattoos though, they can be sooo beautiful.

  16. My right arm is a half sleeve horse theme. I have the traditional Pharaoh's Horses, a horseshoe, french link snaffle, & fox head on my outer arm, inner arm has all types of horse treats with the phrase "hold fast, sit sure" in latin.

  17. I 100% thought we were going to talk about how to tattoo a horse. So, I'll watch that video! I have no tattoos. Very boring. I had a pierced eyebrow in college though...

  18. My tribute to Allen when it was brand new. Still love this tattoo. You already saw the tortoise on my arm that's pretty horse related. http://i582.photobucket.com/albums/ss269/darkjewel79/tattoo.jpg

  19. I love your handy drawing. Hahaha.

  20. I have a carousel horse on my ankle. I wanted something horsey, but not just a plain horse.

  21. I am a huge, huge, huge fan of body modification and tats. I've kind of pulled out a few older piercings and cut myself off at 7 tattoos now that I am a little older - although I'd be covered head to toe if I had unlimited amounts of cash. Horse-related tats on me include the Trakehner brand, and a G, an M, and a Q for Gogo, Metro, and Quincy. The Trak brand is all black, the letters are outlined in blocky black and filled with the horse's corresponding barn color. If they are with me until they die, they get honored with a letter.

  22. I have a horse tattoo, but it's a pony drawn by my good friend who is a toy designer. I have plans to get a big horse shoe tattoo for Riley (soon) to include his tattoo number and some Irish Flowers!

  23. The only tattoo I have right now is my husband's name in his original Korean language. (Before he became all Americanized.) But I'm going to have a horse tattoo as well, eventually. Something fairly vague but tasteful, something that can represent both my love of horses as a whole and my specific heart horse. I have had the design picked out already, and the location, but I like to hang on to tattoo ideas for quite a few years. That way I know I won't later wish I'd not done it.

  24. I am tattoo free, but my best friend has a ying/yang horse head tattoo between her shoulder blades. It's quite nice

  25. I have the silhouette of a running horse on my left foot. The foot is the perfect spot because it doesn't get fat, is easily covered, but also easily shown.

  26. Frizzle's tattoo sounds just like mine!

I have a tattoo of Prince on the inside of my left foot. It's literally a scanned picture of him that we made into a slightly artsy looking silhouette, and added a "P" into his tail to make it even more personal to him.

I love it and I love the location. I'm planning on getting a matching Hero one soon (probably on the outside of the same foot), and I actually am on a very long wait list for a tattoo artist that does water color tattoos... I'm not sure if I'm going to have him add color and some sort of design between the two of the horses, or maybe do something else somewhere else.

  27. I've thought about this too. My mom, dad and brother have tattoos and I fail. But I have no idea what I would do. So indecisive!

  28. I have a bunch of tattoos, but no horsey ones yet. I do have two horse tattoos drawn up and ready to be inked on, just haven't gotten around to actually getting them. One is an abstract line drawing of a horse in shoulder in that I'm going to put over the spot my back was broken (L-5, lower back. Yes, it will be a "tramp stamp", but I don't care.) The other is really hard to describe and I don't have a picture of it, but it's an abstract spider (the bug) with the body as a stylized horse's head. It looks way better than it sounds. And it's for my horse named Spider. I don't know where I want to put it, which is the main reason I haven't had it inked yet. I've thought about putting Spider on my lower back, but he wasn't the horse who broke my back so it doesn't feel quite right. Maybe I'll put one on one side of my spine and the other on the other side. I don't know.

    That got super long.......

  29. I have two tattoos now, and getting a 3rd. Technically both of mine are equestrian currently (one is memorial but still equestrian) and the 3rd won't be. I think tattoos are a personal choice, and they can be as meaningful or as random as you want. Both are currently on my feet, but my next is going on my upper arm.

  30. Here's a link to my tattoo of a baroque style horse!! http://myhorseforum.com/threads/the-ultimate-tattoo-thread.416289/page-96

I have a few other tattoos but this is my only horsey one :)

  31. I have a horsey tattoo! I got the Trakehner brand on my hip to match my pony like so https://scontent-atl3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xfa1/v/t1.0-9/s720x720/72889_1816900219724_404105664_n.jpg?oh=3cc5c98c65f710261ee59859580c9e42&oe=56E37ECC I never thought of myself as a tattoo person, but I was going through a really tough time and my horse was the only thing that seemed permanent. I also have a non-horsey tattoo on my foot.

  32. I'm a little late to the party, but to answer your question, yes I have 5 tattoos and 3 of them are related to horses. One I got at 18 that says "ride to live live to ride" and its on my foot. A year after that I drew a horse and had the artist put it next to those words, since everyone who read it thought "motorcycle". Uh. No
I have the poem "ode to the horse" on my ribcage in honor of Spirit, when he died.
My next tattoo idea horse wise has to do with thei lip tat #s. I think IM going to get them down my spine or inner upper arm. Not sure yet!
