black and fleecy |
But my breeches are trying to die and I'm going to have to do something because at my (cough) highly advanced age, it is not ok to prance around in leggings. Ever. So I need breeches in a dressage-acceptable color and that don't make me horrified.
Grey, not fleecy |
I'm specifically curious about weight and people who are not pixies. I wear a 34. I'm ok with that, but things that look fantastic on a 24 are not always going to be for the 34s of the world, if you know what I mean. (Read: no plaid. Ever.)
Even if you don't wear white, what's out there to like?
I seriously hate shopping for breeches too. I'm a size 30 and I just buy whatever I can find cheapest on ebay and not look at my outfits in pictures too closely.
ReplyDeleteOkay, I wear a 28. I might be a pixie to some, but I'm athletic like whoa and my legs have muscular curves. Not always flattering in breeches.
ReplyDeleteI looooooove the Royal Highness high waisted breeches from VTO (often on sale for $50). High waisted breeches hide a multitude of sins, and make the rider with a hip-to-waist ratio that can be impossible to fit really doable. My hips are wide, and fit in those suckers really fabulously. Give them a try.
Also, for white breeches, some people have great luck with the under-breech things like SmartSlim and the equivalent from FITS (on sale right now in quite a few places. It's call wunderbreech or something like that...)
Grrrrr, I just wrote a much longer reply and stupid Blogger ate it. Eff you, Blogger.
ReplyDeleteIn short, I know nothing about white breeches because I don't ever plan to ever ride dressage ever, but I currently wear a 32 in the SP Pipers because they fit my unusual body the best. And colors FTW.
I'm a size 30, with huge thighs so definitely not a pixie. What fits me best and is sooooo comfortable are TS Trophy Hunters. Yes, I know they're pricey but the pairs I have are going on 2-3 years and wearing great, whereas my cheap breeches would die after about 8 months.
ReplyDeleteLol @ plaid comment. Is cute on some ppl but does not belong on my rear.
ReplyDeleteI hear that people with normal bodies seem to like the white breeches with black full seats! They kinda hid some stuff. Also, my trainer is taller and broader than I am and she wears some sort of legging underneath hers to create a smoother silhouette. Just remember that everyone feels the same way about wearing those things!!!
ReplyDeletei absolutely LOVE my whites. LOVE them so much, i would wear them everyday (if they weren't whites and thus, impractical!). they are my best fitting, most comfortable, and most flattering breeks. my only rule is: must have contrast seat--no white on white. https://www.smartpakequine.com/select-dress-champion-3-full-seat-breeches-10398p
ReplyDeleteRomfh makes white full seats specifically for curvy women! I can't remember which of their lines specifically fits curvy women, but I know they look good. Other perks of Romfh: good pricing (IMO), technical fabrics (stain resistant, wicking), and excellent customer service.
ReplyDeleteContradicting bls above, I think that white-on-white is the best for shows. I know most peoples' black seats just blend into their saddle, but when it doesn't it's.... not as classy looking. I guess you could go with a gray seat, but I feel like your choices are usually white/white or white/black. Good luck!
OK, white is TOUGH because you have to find a fabric that moves with you but also hides fat dimples. I love the Goode Rider Pro Rider Full Seat in white, the fabric moves but is nice and opaque. Mine are white with a grey full seat. I am a 28-30 with a curvy lower half. On the more affordable side, I also have a pair of white Kerrits (Med size) pull on full seats that also are stretchy, but substantial. My day to day breeches are full seat Pipers. I usually go a size up because they're too low rise, but in good news they fixed the pinchy closure issue with the newest lot of them. Full seats take a while to get used to, but they really do help with grip.
ReplyDeletePS, lol, I would stay steer clear of technical fabrics or anything slick. I bought some Ariats made of a more thin style technical fabric and I can't get a grip to save my life, too slippery in the saddle!
DeleteI second Goode Rider but tbh I found them to be slightly see through higher up but I rectify it with white boyshorts. I wear both the FS and knee patch in a 26 and they fit soooo well.
DeleteI've found that full seat breeches actually have a more slimming effect.
ReplyDeleteGet a pair of white breeches and a pair of grey or a stone blue, try them out, and if you don't like them, exchange/return/resell. I think you can rock the whites, damnit.
ReplyDeleteMy favorites are a pair of Irideon pull ons in white. I'm just into comfort and full seats are usually a bit binding. All that being said, if I wanted to invest I might try some FITS. The big trouble with white breeches is getting them clean again after you ride in them. Hard for me to invest in really expensive ones because of of that. Might be good to look into the ones with the dark seat full seat fabrics.
ReplyDeleteThe only whites I have are Kerrits that I got used from a friend when she stopped riding. The material is thick enough that I don't feel naked, but thin enough that a light-colored thong is absolutely required... Basically I'm with Carly - I wear cheap, used breeches and don't get hung up on things like proper fit, flattering lines, etc. ;]
ReplyDeleteEven as a size 28 I detest white breeches. I also hate anything tight. I wear TS trophy hunter and find them the most comfortable. I have an old pair that may be a 34 or 32. You can have them! My dressage friends have said tan breeches are acceptable for lower levels.
ReplyDeleteI'm a 34 and I swear by Kerrits! I second that the thickness is exceptional They always fit perfectly, are rarely uncomfortable (elastic around ankles can be sweaty in summer) and make me feel confident in them. The fabric is wonderful in summertime and can be layered in winter nicely with leggings. Not too expensive either!
ReplyDeleteI also really love TuffRider. They too fit my rather, ahem, shapely bottom half and I never feel uncomfortable or exposed in them.
I wish I could splurge on breeches like FITS but I dont even know the sizing and if I coudl squeeze my ass into them so I remain true to Kerrits and TR
You know, if I ever actually WEAR breeches. I wear leggings a lot haha
DeleteI really like TuffRider, too. They're cheap and wash well. I had a whole comment typed out, but it got eaten :(
DeleteI have a pair of Latigos that I love the stain proof nature of and the nice thick blemish hiding qualities (you couldn't see my epic bruise under them!!!), but their sizing is way wacky and they went out of business. Sooooo I'm no help, but I do recommend full seat whites for sure, I have a grey seat and like the look.
ReplyDeleteI don't own a pair of white breeches and I doubt I ever will, but who knows. I prefer TS to anything else. Best idea? TS + SmartSlim. TS don't hide much though, so I don't think I'd go white with them.
ReplyDeleteI wish I could tell you what brand my magical white breeches are. Hell, I wish I knew so I could buy more! 15 years ago when I was an exchange student in Sweden, I started taking riding lessons. I didn't want to pay full price for new breeches, so my host mom took me to a tack store in Stockholm which had a basement filled with second hand stuff for horse and rider. I found a pair of breeches that fit me perfectly. Fast forward to present day... They still fit me perfectly. I am not the same size I was then, in fact I think my pant size has doubled since then. So I am convinced they were created by wizards...
ReplyDeleteI'm a huge fan of TS Symphony 3 Rosa, the knee patch version. Love them. I pulled them off the rack randomly when I needed a pair when trying on tall boots at our local tack store. I HAD to buy them. They are very flattering for those of us with normal bodies and very comfortable. Shop around b/c they come in a lot of different colors including white. They run a tad big so if you're between sizes I would go down a size.
ReplyDeleteI'm a huge fan of Peter Williams breeches. I have the mid rise, but going to go full seat next time. Lets face it. Mid rise doesn't look good on anyone but the emaciated.
ReplyDeleteThe only thing that gets me through wearing white breeches is fancy belts. Just focus on all the pretty show belts you can wear....
Dang it blogger! It ate my comment. The gist of it: I'm short and wear a 34, and you know I heart FITS. If I were going to get a new set of whites, FITS for sure, with Wunderbreech. As it is I have a set of full seat white on white from VTO that's okay, but too big. I wear whatever the generic spanx are underneath to smooth lumps and lines and prevent any see-through issues.
ReplyDeleteTan breeches are also perfectly acceptable for dressage phase of eventing - actually, they used to be mandatory for women at lower levels. And lots of dressage riders wear tan at lower levels too. Or gray. Don't feel obligated to wear white.
good luck shopping!! i second Niamh about the white pants with black full seat - they definitely have a flattering effect! my pants have a gray full seat, and it also helps, IMO
ReplyDeleteOk. so I at best got to a 28, but I'm like all waist, so a lot of breeches do weird things when you are a lot waist and little hip. I still like TR low rise pull ons. They are super comfy and don't make my already nervous stomach feel squeezed during lessons. You can even find them cheap on Amazon Prime, which means fast shipping, and free returns ;)
ReplyDeleteI have a pair of Pikuers and they are OK....show worthy and all that but honestly, the FITS I bought second hand are the BOMB. i'm only 5'2 and not that big...but I have a HUGE ass..so its really hard for me to find pants that fit and stretch the right way to go over my butt. The fits are by far the best because I hate how full seats can get so tight in the thigh.
ReplyDeleteI love Romfh these days. The fabric sucks everything in and they stretch and move every which way. I have a pair of white Tuff Riders that are low cut and have the grey seat. They aren't bad about showing bulges, but they are a bit see through. For less expensive breeches, those are my two choices.
