Rocking the fancy halter |
I know I've
reviewed them before, but I am a huge fan of
Danzig Brothers leather halters. Durable, classy, high quality, decent price. I had one for Izzy and Cuna has one. And now I have a Courage. Every time I work with him, he makes a stronger argument for being Cuna II and not just a cool resale type project (as if that was ever on the table. Hubs snorted when I mentioned it).
I love nice halters. They're the one piece of tack I really buy for the horse and then just keep with them. I customize them, take care of them, and am proud to show them off when we travel. We're already throwing out tentative plans for the fall, thinking about trail rides, baby grass hopper clinics, and maybe a lesson here and there. As such, I think Courage needs a halter.

Cute face, giant halter |
Because I am terrible at visualizing things and hate measuring, I equipped myself with a size chart and then brought Cuna's halter out to try on for size.
Suffice to say, it doesn't quite fit.
Cuna's well-filled-out 16.3 frame is apparently larger than the little guy's mere 16.1 and dainty face.
I need to bust out the measuring tape and see how many sizes we need to go down, since apparently "large thoroughbred" isn't going to cut it.

A very distressing problem |
Once I figure that out, I'm stuck with a lot more decisions. Cuna goes in havana/stainless because he looks smashing in brown. Courage is bay, so he can pull off black leather if he wants to. He could also go in brass hardware. That said, I am loving the havana/stainless look.
Thoughts? If you were a Courage, what colors would you wear?
Havanna and brass, no question! I also wonder if that adorably dainty schnoz of his would look better with a 3/4 inch halter instead of a 1 inch?
ReplyDeleteI vote black with stainless.
ReplyDeleteI vote black with stainless also! I am sooooo into black leather.....
ReplyDeleteNo fashion advice here. Size wise, he may need a cob.
ReplyDeleteBlack with stainless for sure. We have a blood bay at our barn who has a black halter and he looks so sexy in it.
ReplyDeleteHavana and Brass, Always liked that look and both my Bay thoroughbreds rocked it. That being said I ended up having to give Ramone an old leather halter I had because Carlos Nylon halter was too dainty and even though its illegal... the people gave him to me with no halter at all.
ReplyDeleteOut of the three thoroughbreds I've had, one being 15.3, one 16.1, and one 16.3... only the last one (Cash) has needed anything bigger than a COB sized bridle/halter. That said, I LOVE havannah and brass on halters, but strangely enough, I prefer stainless for my bridles. Meh. Haha!! I think either brass or stainless would look good on him, Havannah is kinda a cover all sort of color, but black does look smashing on a bay. ... some help I am, eh?
ReplyDeleteI love the SmartPak halters. Brown leather with brass gear. It's traditional and classy to me. Also, they are priced well and a Cob fits Simon pretty well. He doesn't have a huge head either, although Courage seems even more dainty.
ReplyDeleteMaybe I should have mentioned--I HATE HATE HATE adjustable chins. So messy and ick. I have yet to find an off the rack halter that offers my beloved english chin. ;)
DeleteHavana with Brass! Also, Rhinegold halters (if you can find one) have english chins. That's what my kids wear (although in black with brass).
ReplyDeleteI really like the havana and stainless on him, since his coloring is light! But I agree that a thinner size (3/4" rather than 1"+) might look nicer on his delicate visage.
ReplyDeleteI think he would look great in black. I like either metal alloy option.
ReplyDelete1. I tried to order a halter from Danzig (the royal blue trim one) - took 2 months to get cuz they missed my order, it came 2 size too huge plus the blue wasn't very royal, and after I returned it, they never gave me my $ back, even after repeated emails/msgs over several months. So bad taste there.
ReplyDelete2. I did already own a Quillin halter which I LOVE. No adj noseband (had that too) and english chin option plus fantastic customer service and good pricing. Also I MUST have throat snap. I even had sent them the halter to switch nameplates when I switched horses and it was easy and fast. So I'm a Quillin fan forever :) (Mare size (#4) = cob bridle or weaver avg horse halter)
3. I am not a brass girl, AT ALL. I love black with stainless. Classy and elegant. And would look smashing on a bay. You have to hunt a little bit to find a matching lead if you want nylon (I do, need something meatier then a flat strap), but they are out there. (no brass!)
I think I vote the black. I'm a fan of the dark colours
ReplyDeleteBlack! It would really draw out the lovely lines of his face.
ReplyDeleteBlack all the way!
ReplyDeleteblack and stainless! bay horses look completely amazing in black. such a sleek look. do it.
ReplyDeleteI like Laz in black tack and he's a bay ya know ;) In terms of color color--what will you do for Courage? Yellow? Green? EEEKS fun! He is sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo handsome it hurts.
ReplyDeletepretty!
ReplyDeleteHavana and Brass :-)
ReplyDeleteI am ALWAYS in favor of brown leather. I think black leather looks cheaper, even when it isn't (though it often is - I hear that black dye is used on inferior leather to make it look better). I'm glad I'm not into dressage so I don't have to deal with the fact that every single freaking dressage saddle in the world is black.
