Teach Me Tuesday: Living the Dream

I'm really very lucky. I don't generally think of myself that way because I have a hearty helping of Murphy's law to go with it, but I remember laughing with redheadlins and Alyssa this summer as we struggle-bused our way through our first derby of the year (ok, Lindsey and I struggle-bused and Alyssa dominated). Whatever happened that day, we were living out our little horse-girl dreams:

We had beautiful thoroughbreds. Pretty show tack and clothes. Friends to ride with. Dreams to chase.

It didn't matter that I got 120 time penalties on xc (because yes, they do time ground poles. oops.). All that mattered in that moment was my thorough realization that I had achieved everything my young self always wanted.

So teach me this Tuesday--what childhood dreams have you achieved?

  1. This is so sweet! I own a pony. A beautiful, wonderful pony, and we have a really really good relationship. That's all my childhood self ever wanted!

  2. I've been able to take my OWN horse to a weekend horse show and show all day in REAL hunter/jumper classes above 2' with fancy clothes and tack. Still makes me smile.

  3. When I was a kid our horses were for working not play (working cattle ranch) but I always wanted to jump. Now I have a horse that is strictly for playing and I've learned how to jump (small things but I prefer it that way).

  4. I finally own a Friesian (cross). My childhood dreams were kind of pathetic! But I'm sure childhood me would be pleased about competing at GP on a horse I trained myself. Still, the Friesian would take precedence over the gold medal I'm sure.

  5. I always dreamed of having a horse that I could have a friendship with, something that would be my best friend in hard times, and after years of not being able to even think about it, I have him. Dream come true for sure. :)

  6. I maybe haven't reached it yet, but I can actually see the end now with my coming two year old filly that will one day be my Hunter Derby/Performance Hunter horse and that makes my hunter princess heart go pitter patter.

  7. Childhood me would be (and adult me is) so overjoyed to have not one put two horses! I never truly dared to dream that would be possible, but deff hoped!

  8. My main childhood dream was to own a horse I always said one day I would want a foal. And my dream came true when I got magic

  9. I grew up to be a horse trainer who lives on a farm with her horses in her back yard! The fact that one of the horses is one that Little Dom worked with and day dreamed about is a bonus. The fact that I'm broke, bruised, and struggling to reach the next level of my riding does not matter to 12 year old me.

  10. Owning my own horse at all was always a dream. We could not afford a horse growing up, so owning a horse is huge for me.

  11. pretty much everything i do with my (lease) horse is a first for me - buying fun (and very occasionally fancy) tack, the truck and trailer, picking and choosing my trailers, horse showing without abandon... at this point in my riding career, it's all new and shiny and more than i had ever hoped for :) (not to be sappy or anything lol). and who knows, maybe one day i'll actually have a horse of my very own? lol

  12. The thing I wanted most as a kid was my own trailer. I didn't think anything could be more awesome than sitting behind the wheel of my own truck hauling my own horses in my own trailer. Nearly two decades of trailer ownership later, I STILL get a total kick out of hauling my horses down the road.

  13. Considering my childhood dream was the Olympics and I'm too weeny to even do Prelim, yeah.

    New, adult dreams!

  16. Oh man, I had a different dream for every different day. Sometimes I was a rancher, moving cows across the wide open. The next, I was a jockey making a name for myself on the track. My dreams are a little different now, but they still center around having fun on my horse in any horsey way. And they are happening.

  17. Having a horse in college is amazing. I would be surprised to see myself getting to work with such nice horses

  18. The only dream I've ever had as kid was to have a horse of my own. Not leased, but owned. The fact that I have one, and especially one that I can just hang out with and do whatever and be happy and ride bareback with a halter, is more than enough.

I never dreamed of ribbons or great riding success or anything like that. There is one last dream I haven't completed yet, though... one of these days I'll lay on her back and read while she grazes in pasture. Probably not this year, though. I'll be a bit unbalanced for most of it, and then a bit top heavy. Lol

  19. My own truck and trailer, check. Riding a horse as fast as it can go, check. Olympics, working on it.

  20. I own a horse and a siberian huskies who are my shadow dogs. I am totally living the dream, and so, so, so thankful for it.
