Teach Me Tuesday: Best Saddle Pads

I recently purged a large number of old saddle pads.
newest ogilvy

I'm not so much a linen collector, so over the years, I have amassed a large number of saddle pads that people were giving away just to avoid having to buy them. But something happened.

A fellow blogger sent me the coolest gift of all time--a personalized Ogilvy baby pad. LOVE. It's thick enough that it doesn't bunch, thin enough it doesn't change my saddle fit, cut PERFECTLY to contour to my horse's back, forward enough for my jump saddle, and it didn't require a bunch of stupid hateful straps to stay put.

Then I got a dressage model. And wouldn't you know, it also achieves holy-(saddle pad)-grail status.

So I purged everything that wasn't ogilvy or super cute.

I have found nirvana.

What makes your perfect saddle pad?

  1. Good fit/material is tops, but then I love fun shapes and colors. Bonus if I find a pad that checks all four of those boxes 😀

Annnnnd now I've added an Ogilvy to my wish list 😂

  2. I've been wanting to try one of those but I haven't wanted to pay full price. I struggle to find pads that fit Stinker's withers (they rival Mount Everest).

    1. They don't go on sale.

      Ever.

      Tear.

    2. I know. Nor have I been able to find them used *double tear*

    3. Mary's tack had Ogilvy saddle pads on sale earlier this year but they are the only place I've seen do so. So keep an eye out for it to happen again (hopefully). I had two and bought two more during the sale and wish I had done more. Sadly I require the profile pad for my big flaps or it would be even easier for me to grow my collection.

    4. Annnnnd now I'm signed up for Mary's email list because that Ogilvy dressage coupe pad 😍

I spent so much less on tack before I started following all these blogs.... I can't decide if that's a good thing or a bad thing!

  4. I love saddle pads. Love. It borders on obsession. While it's important that they don't slide around, I mostly go for color. Unfortunately I've been ending up with a shocking number of white pads lately, which is a travesty, but I'm usually drawn to pretty colors.

  5. I may have a slight saddle pad addiction...I think I have something like 25. And that's just the dressage pads. That said, I don't like all the pads I have...my favorites have enough curve to the spine to fit nicely on my shapely pony, don't need the velcro straps (I just cut them off...hate those straps), and don't curl up in the corners. Also, I prefer a smaller diamond quilt, rather than the big squares or shapes. My current favorites are my Toklat Classics pads, and an ancient Dover pad that's a hand-me-down of a hand-me-down.

  6. I'm probably in the minority but I don't find Oglivy pads all that special. I've owned a couple and ended up selling all but the one I keep as my dressage show pad until I can get off my bum and buy a better pad. They're definitely not bad pads, but not worth the price in my opinion. I've only washed it like three times and the black from the binding has substantially faded.

  7. Love my Ogilvy's. I've washed them all a ton and they always come clean easily and the colored bindings have faded very little. Plus the fit and the thickness are perfect too. I think they're pretty fairly priced... saddle pads ain't cheap anymore, especially not high quality/custom ones.

  8. My husband thinks that I have a saddle pad problem. I disagree because, well, just because. OKAY?

I haven't tried the Olgivy so now I have to search them out! (Husband says thanks- but that might be his sarcastic voice, it's hard to tell these days)

  9. Greenhawk has a knock off that's less expensive...and supposed to be quite good.

    1. Huh. I need a Canadian friend to bring me one to test. Preferably with another ogilvy.

    2. I'm about 20 minutes from the border and about 45 minutes from a Greenhawk store...just saying.... 😉 Adventure!!!

  10. if anyones got a cheap dupe idea for the ogilvy baby pad gimme a holler. I have too many saddle pads and they are a pain to wash. i miss baby pads, so much easier.

  11. I haven't tried an Ogilvy, mostly because I've found a combination that works well for us: a ThinLine pad and a Toklat Classics II or III pad. I like the Toklat pads because they're almost impossible to kill, and the ThinLine provides impact absorbency as well as being nice and, well, thin. Plus, my stern saddle fitter authorized only the TL/Toklat under the dressage saddle. ;)

    1. The toklat pads are quite solid--good cut and construction. They're a bit too thick for my (Craigslist special) washing machine to handle though.

  12. I too hate straps everywhere but was a hold out on the Ogilvy baby pad for a while. Lesson learned- these blog chicks know what's up! No slip, wash well, no straps- I can't put Ellie in anything else! I just need to get around to selling my gazillion other pads to keep my Ogilvy collection growing!

  13. I'm honestly not all that picky so long as the thing fits, seems comfortable for the horse, and doesn't slip around. And I basically hate doing laundry so I tend to collect new (or usually consignment) saddle pads instead haha

  14. I don't ride my horse without a thinline. This includes the mare I trained but don't own and my warmblood gelding who is "walk only" at the moment (bringing back from injury).

The shock absorbancy is amazing and it's so thin it doesn't bother the saddle fit at all.

  15. I love the Ogilvy baby pads, too!

  16. Ogilvy is pretty much all I ride in these days. I just think they are much nicer than all other pads I've used. I have way more AP cut than dressage but I'm sure I'll Amass more in the coming year.

  17. I'm still using a pad under my hunt saddle that I got from Schneiders some 11 years ago. We were at a show, they were on sale and the now ex grabbed 2 for me. One was for the show and then ended up being my work pad after that. The other one I don't think ever made it out or the plastic.

I also have two pads from EOUS. A friend worked there, I did some side work for them and often got paid partly in credit / products. I have a hunt pad with matching polos and a dressage pad with matching polos. None of it has been used yet so I can't really reviw them effectivly but the packaging is holding up well, so there is always that. Hahaha!
