Therapy

Life events lately have me not in the best of mindsets, which has me reflecting the whole "my horse is my therapist" gag that we've all heard one way or another.
There's no doubt about it: time spent with my horse can be incredibly soothing.
But it's important to remember that to be fair to my horse, I have to check all my baggage at the barn gate.
He can't fix everything in my life. He definitely knows when things are off kilter.
It isn't fair to him to show up and dump my shit on his pretty head.
Instead, I need to show up, take a deep breath, and enjoy the scent of horses.
 And hugs.
 And laughs.
And know that one way or another, we'll get through all of this together.

  1. You said it. I would be totally lost without my horses there to get me through the tough times.

  6. That's why my horses are my therapy - as soon as I pull into the barn, by baggage drops to the ground. I immediately switch gears and join my horses' world. Once the last piece of tack has been put away and I am back in my car, only then do I even remember that I have problems. Not always, but just having the opportunity to let it all slide off my shoulders for an hour or two is enough to resolve most of my frustrations. And if things don't solve themselves while I am in the saddle, the problem that I come back to is usually a bit smaller with a fresher outlook.

It's not cheap therapy, but it is effective. :0)

  7. My horses are my therapy too. I find it relaxing and soothing to clean stalls, crazy as it seems. I can work my shit out while the horse is turned out- rolling, bucking and running around. It's a win for both sides.

  10. On days I'm super emotionally taxed or distraught I always keep it simple like trail ride or just a good groom and graze. That way I can enjoy the horse and ease my stress without accidentally taking out all of my frustrations on him! Lovely photos.

  11. I like to think that while my horse isn't my therapist, he is my therapy. It's nice to have to leave behind all of adult problems to ensure he gets a good ride.

  12. Sorry for whatever life is throwing at you right now. I can have some super stressful days and weeks with my work but one ride always just makes me forget about pretty much all of it. I can't even give one second of concentration to life problems when I'm riding, or just doing anything with my ponyfaces. Hang in there, Courage will definitely get you through it!
