Teach Me Tuesday: Horse Accessories

If you're horsey enough to read a horse blog, you're pretty horsey. So. How does that look around your house? I'd venture that most of us aren't in exclusively-horsey relationships, so what does that end up looking like? Do you pretend your barn clothes are around-town clothes? Deck out your house out with horse-themed art? Keep a pony in the yard to greet the neighbors? Buy saddle for the dog?

My husband isn't horsey. We have one awesome horse painting by Alyssa that is/will be hung on the walls and I most definitely wear nice horsey clothes around until they become confirmed Barn Clothes (you know, when you can't wash the hay out any more).

I wanted to print out a GIANT horse poster and hang it behind the couch in the living room, but he nixed that. Can't imagine why, haha.

How does everyone else do it?

  1. All of our horsey decor is relegated to the tackroom, except for one antique print that's framed in the den. The rest of the horse-themed decor involves bits of hay strewn across the floor, tracked in my hubby and I.

I don't have a saddle for Gus, but probably could.

  2. I'm slowly adding more horse things to my walls at home, mostly because I'm putting some of my favorite pictures on canvas, and a lot of those pictures have Rico and I in them. Luckily I live on my own, so I can put whatever I want on the walls! I'm trying not to make it too excessive though. I'd say for every horse thing on my walls, I'll have two not-horse things.

Clothes-wise I have strictly barn clothes, strictly not-barn clothes, and then some clothes that do both. I totally wear my Dublin river boots to not-horse things (like running errands), but for the most part if you saw me out and about, you wouldn't know I rode.

  3. Our whole house is pretty horsey. I have various horse statuettes and sculptures on bookshelves the fireplace mantle. There's a gallery-wall style collection of equine artwork and photographs in our hallway. I have foxhunting coasters and snaffle bit napkin rings on the dining table. There's a coffee table book of equine photography in the living room. There's a few artfully arranged stacks of books composed entirely of horse-themed books. I have a string of meaningful show ribbons hung in the living room with a funky horse painting above them. A handmade pillow which reads "Horse People Are Stable People" resides on a chair in the living room and is accompanied by a throw blanket with horses all over it. There are zero wedding pictures at home, but several framed photos of Moe and I at shows. A horse person very obviously lives in my house.

I freely mix nicer barn clothing with casual stuff and vice versa. I wore my hunting jacket as a blazer to a Christmas party a few weeks ago. My black Kerrits tights once doubled as leggings in an outfit. The line between barn clothes and regular clothes apparently does not exist in my world. :/

    1. That line doesn't exist for me either lol. Plus I always get compliments on my breeches on campus so screw it! Saves me time and laundry from having to change so much.

  4. I have zero horsey items, save for a few framed pictures of me and my horses. I have no horse-related clothing, no horse paintings, no horse statues, etc. I dunno - never really felt the need to horse-up my living area.

  5. The husband likes horses, too so the house is moderately horsey. The hallway is becoming the "Hall of Eventing Fame" as I put up more and more show pictures! The closet in the office is also covered in ribbons, and I have several pieces of horse art/photos in the bedroom. I GENERALLY don't mix barn clothes and 'real people' clothes.. but.. sometimes it happens.

  6. My barn clothes are my real people clothes... Is that not how this works? Oops.

My favorite jeans at the moment cost me $8 at Walmart and I wear them everywhere.

As for the house, if I lived alone it would probably be pretty sparsely decorated except for horse stuff. But I live with my parents (in school still) and really the only horsey decor that has made it out into the house is a few pictures of me riding.

  7. You've seen our place, so you know that for the most part, horse life is relegated to the garage.. or at least I wallpaper it in ribbons :) but it's slowly creeping into the rest of our house as well... The baby *might* have one lone tri-color hanging in her nursery as inspiration, and all the sudden there's an equestrian style coffee table book in our living room... and there might be more photos of Prairie in our house than of our kid. There's definitely more photos of the horses than there are of our wedding, or us in general... But to be fair, the horses are around professional photographers a lot more than the rest of us are.

As for clothes, I have to draw a reasonably hard line. With the pellet bedding there is a layer of horse smelling dust that permeates clothing and never quite gets out. Accidently wore a silk scarf to the barn once and it's never really ever gotten clean again..

  8. Our living room is decorated with repro circus and wild west show posters from turn of the century. Most feature horse acts. And I have two paintings in other parts of the house. That's it for me. Husband likes horses, but we both love art and have many interests.

  9. i actually don't have much. an old tri color ribbon hanging here... a framed picture (or two) there.... oh and a giant fucking crazy ass wooden horse in the middle of my living room. ya know. not much. lol

  10. I have my own office and all of my beautiful horse prints are in there, along with ribbons and other doodads. My boots, chaps, and spurs are a permanent fixture by the door, does that count?

  11. We have lots of horse pictures, a Remington replica, and then various articles that I track into the apartment.

For the most part I have barn clothes and other clothes. Except jeans my stuff doesn't normally cross worlds bc as gingham said some stuff doesn't recover.

  12. Thankfully, my husband also rides. He doesn't really love that our blinds are covered in ribbons, but he's ok with it. We have lots of horse prints, paintings, and nicknacks all over the house. Even if your SO doesn't like horses, what else are you going to decorate the house with? That said, the amount of horsey stuff in my house has grown nearly exponentially since my husband started riding.

  13. I find my home is getting less and less horsey...Our family room has an awesome woodboard horse painting, fancy horse lamps and a neat wooden horse from ZGallerie...however in our new house (ummm spoiler alert!) I'm retiring these items since I've had them for so long and am a little bored with them. I also need to put up more pics in general - not just of the horse - but he is the focal piece of art in our dining room as well. I try not to mix regular clothes and barn clothes because stains. But my barn clothes are worn around town shamelessly because I do not have time to go changing between riding and errands usually. I felt really bad tracking in quite a bit of mud into Subway yesterday, I tried to stomp it all off before I got in, but failed miserably. Oh well!

  14. My home is quite horsey; I have loads of pony books scattered about, I love a nice equine statue and I will happily hang horses on my walls.

But as for clothes ~ if you met me outside of the paddocks, you'd never think that I ride. I wear vintage, and as a result look nothing like a barn rat! It's funny tho when the opposite happens and I go in my 'normal' dress to the horse, because I'm way too gussied up for the jobs I'm doing!

  15. The home is pretty sparse in general, but that's mostly because we tend to move a lot and rent. After the 4th move in 3 years I got tired of unpacking. Hopefully we will come to rest somewhere (other than a graveyard) and I will decorate once again. Even with decorating I don't think I have any true horse themed decorations except for pictures of my endurance rides.

As for clothes - I get filthy dirty just driving to the barn (it is a skill I seemed to have passed down to my kiddo), so I try really hard to have barn only clothes.

  16. My hubby has minimal love for live horses, but doesn't mind equestrian decor. Which is probably how we ended up with way too many horse prints. I'm out of wall space!!! And I have a foxhunting themed powder room

  17. We have some horsey decor that DH approved. In fact, we have 3 paintings in our dining room, and a wood & metal horse in the loft. Plus, my office is horse-central. All horsey things all the time!

  18. I have a big-ish canvas of me and my unicorn, and a couple smaller 8x12(?) pictures with me and my unicorn IN THE LIVING ROOM. (With potentially room for a little shelf for satin ribbons alongside them.) It was actually my husband's idea. *swoon* The obligatory horse calendar. A horse painting I did which was brilliant at the time but now I want to try again and see if I can do better. (I think I can.) The miscellaneous horse tack that my husband is adamant on removing to the garage whenever he finds it. A whole horsey section on the bookshelf, not as large as I'd like but I have a pile of horsey books in my bedroom, too. Oh, and my kids have a leadline saddle we were gifted a while back in their room, which they love sitting on. (And which my husband wants to move out to the garage with all the other "useless" horse stuff.)

As for clothes, aside from the raggedy "approved for work at the barn" selection, I only have three pairs of breeches and a pair of half chaps right now. Eventually I'll have a very small section of the closet dedicated to (one) show outfit.
