Here Goes

After an embarrassing number of months in a row in which I absolutely swore I'd make the time and ride my own horse and get my shit together, I finally realized I couldn't keep making a mortgage payment a month to ride bareback for 20 minutes once every 30 days.

It doesn't make any sense.

But.

Zoe is such a foundational part of my life that there's no way I'm letting her go.

I did the reasonable adulty thing and reached out to a trainer I trust and set up a lease situation with a fancy legal agreement and everything

Not gonna lie, the day I put her on the trailer and watched her drive away was really shitty for me. I told myself it was a two week trial and it might go ok and it might not.

The idea of not paying $$$ to not ride was nice.

The truth was that I didn't have time to ride if I had wanted to.

And yeah when I got the text that she wasn't quite the right fit for the situation, I was definitely not sad she was coming home.

So now she's back.

And now I'm definitely going to ride this time.

Just you watch.

  1. I read the first half and was like ‘nooooo’ and then I was ‘it’s none of your business so shut up. She gets to make her choices’ and then I was ‘yaaaay’.

    So quite the roller coaster.

  3. I can't even imagine. Hopefully you can find someone to do a lease or even a half lease at you barn. Then you still have her to ride and love on.

  4. Give it a try and see what happens. You're different, she is a willing and happy horse, and you might have more fun than you think. If not go into plan B with ZB having more amateur miles. Enjoy!

  5. Feeling your pain. Energy, time and money are finite resources. Paying a mortgage on a single income + owning a horse is rough. Wishing you the best of luck!

  6. Hearing you on this right now. I’ve been struggling to spend as much time at the barn as I want. I’m still working on it but it’s an expensive hobby to not be doing anything with.

    1. Right. I don’t mind the money if I’m taking full advantage of it, but that’s not an easy thing to do.
