Sagebrush Over Satin

I'm not feeling it on the horse showing front right now. I'm just not. I love riding Zoëbird at home and I'm excited about doing a series of clinics with her and I'm thrilled that I'm able to keep her in part training and that's all well and good.

But like. Nothing about a horse show sounds fun to me right now.

Oh and I've been watching Westerns lately and like.
godless. watch it.

I live in the west. And I have a ranch bred horse.

And that is a literal thing I can actually do.

SO WE'RE DOING IT. (Soon. Snow melting off the mountains as we speak.)

guys she's not even trying yet

Don't get me wrong here--ZB is a talented, good-minded, hard-working lady and the progress she makes in her dressage training every day is phenomenal. And yeah long term I want to get my bronze medal on her.

This isn't me abandoning those goals.

A huge part of getting Zoë to me was finding a horse that I could just flat have fun on. And y'know.

Whether it's our first outside right lead canter....

Or just hanging out with friends on a gorgeous day...

She makes me smile every day.

It's not a sayonara to horse showing. We'll get back to it. There are just so many other fun things to do right now.

I'd be silly not to.

  1. Love this. Have fun with your beautiful lady. Riding out is good for the soul. And builds so much trust and partnership.

  2. I love this. I enjoy showing, but mostly I enjoy the relationship I have with my horses. It's so fun when you have a horse that can go out and do all sort of variable things -- ZB is rocking at that. I can't wait to see what kind of western adventures you cook up! 😁

  3. Godless was a godsend and I'm 100% with you. If it weren't for the local horse trials I'd never show again. I'd rather be out riding in the woods or across plains (if we had them). There's no rush and honestly you'll have a better horse for it. ♡ She's so perfect for everything you want.

  4. horse shows for the typical adult ammy are only really worth if you really want to be doing them. otherwise.... what's the point? also i love that barrel video haha, what a funny goofy mare!

  8. Fun = Sound mind, imo.

The more you do, the more you expose her to, the better off everyone will be.

    So definitely have fun!

  10. she looks great and as long as you are having fun she doesnt care at all what you do. You are the second one to recommend Godless to me (the other was a coworker who is not even a horse person but she told me I had to watch it just to see the horses!) LOL. I have added to my queue!! Keep on having fun with the ZB :)

    1. Uh well as a horse person, I was not super impressed by the horse parts. There was some nice asides about horsemanship though. ;-)

  12. I hate showing. Always have, probably always will. I do it only to prove to myself that I’ve hit the mark on whatever level I’m doing in dressage (except the levels with poorly written tests, I refuse to ride poorly written tests, so screw those levels). If you’ve got nothing to prove to yourself by riding the tests, why bother?

Godless was good, but that cliche ending killed me.

    1. I thought the characters were shockingly well drawn for a western though that might be unfair to westerns. GUESS ILL WATCH MORE TO FIND OUT.

I definitely believe in showing as a meter of progress. And I love ribbons. I also need a nap and love trail rides.

  13. Horse showing really isn't the be all end all of having horses. Go out there and do all the things and have all the fun! Horse shows will still be there if you decide you miss them. And I'm sure Zoe will be more than happy to play along, whatever you end up doing!

  14. I'm with you - tons more fun things to do with horses than show. You go get those trails :)

  15. Tbh, I first read the title as "Sagebrush over Satan" and I was pretty sure you were going to teach us some really strange ancient ritual or something.
But if your heart isn't in showing, I think its awesome for you to just go out and enjoy time with your super amazing lil horse!

    1. I like that you assume I’d know rituals like that. I must be doing something right.

Also, I am thrilled for you that you've found such a perfect partner.

  21. I'm all about doing whatever you want to do with your horse -- I don't care if it's just grooming or showing at WEF, or something in between. You should go do whatever sounds FUN!
