Friday Whimsy: What a Tack Ho Isn't

Just a few of my pretties
There are some fun tack blog hops going around right now.  I want to do them, but need to remember to take pictures for them first. Oops. Anyways. Before this gets too out of hand, I think we need to clear something up. From one tack 'ho to some others(and the rest of you):

Saddle pad collecting isn't tack 'hoing.

Really. Unless we're talking about trendy, pricey half pads then yes, you're all in.

also pictured: not tack
But other than that, no. Saying that a saddle pad collection is tack whoring is like calling yourself a clothes horse because you like towels.

Wtf. No. Towels (and saddle pads) are essential linens with a specific purpose. There's nothing wrong with having lots of them or only buying cute ones or having matched sets or whatever, but at the end of the day, you're collecting linens. Everybody needs linens. There is nothing excessive about having linens. Linens are a cushy part of life in a first world country. I love linens (or at least the ability to dry off after a shower). I am in no way knocking linens.

like this one time i bought a whistle bit for literally no reason
But linens aren't tack.

Just saying.

  1. Good, because saddle pads are the one thing I just mentally cannot part with real money over. I just have this huge hangup on it. I want to pay like $10 for one, but they're all like $30 so I just don't and I keep using my pad from 6th grade. This is an illness, I tell you!

    1. This is why you end up with all my ugly castoffs that I've shrunk over the years... You like my horsie goodwill drop off. And I mean that in the most loving way. :)

    2. Totally with you here! I'm also the saddle pad goodwill in that I take free ones when they are given out, but the idea of paying money for them gives me spasms.

    1. Why do I have to know in order to buy it?

Theoretically, it encourages salivation for a dry mouthed horse. In practice, I have no freaking clue and I'm excited to try it out.

  3. Hahah! This is awesome. I've never been comfortable calling myself a Ho, but certainly admit to Hoarder tendencies when it comes to certain equine items. Hoarder is one who will not let go of items believing someday - even if the item is dreadfully out of style - might have another 15 hand horse or 16.2 hand horse or 18 hand horse that could use that. There is little admiration just irrational attachment the majority of my pretties, which just lie around in bins that I hold onto with a death grip. Not that I don't delight in coming across my pony club saddle pad circa1990 from time to time ;)

  5. I don't really ever consider the saddle pads either. I guess I don't have that many... two Ogilvy half pads a couple of dressage pads with memory foam inserts and probably 10 custom baby pads... they just didn't even occur to me. This post made me giggle though for sure.

  6. Ok whew!!! *glances over at my pile of 10+ saddle pads I just washed*. I often wonder why I have so many saddle pads for one horse but ... thank you for validating me! :)

  7. FINE THEN I will enjoy my lovely linen collection. Perhaps I need matching hand towels to go with the saddle pads? You bring up a good point there. :D

  8. Hahahaha cheers to us in the "saddle pad goodwill" category. Except I'm that way with everything - pretty much all my stuff is used, hand-me-downs from friends and trainers =P

  9. EXCUSE ME? Linens are necessary and absolutely considering whoring if you buy them when you don't need them and have like literally a thousand. I find pads everywhere. Pads I haven't used in years. Its insane.

that being said I have 3 bridle sper horse and at least 2 breastplates and about a 100 bits and 4 sets of boots, for each phase for each horse

but how DARE you knock my linens :P

  10. At $50-$65+ a pad, I hardly consider it NOT HORING. I mean really, you only NEED 1 saddle pad for your 1 saddle, and any $17 pad would do. Not every color of the rainbow with custom prints, etc, like me :D

  11. I can't stop giggling. Or thinking about monogramming even more of my horsey-type linens.

  12. I dunno about that.... you only need one or two saddles, or one or two bridles, but you NEED about 25 pads! In every different color! One for every day of the week!

  13. This is the bad part of blogging. Now I want to buy a whistle bit just for the fact that it's fun to say whistle bit...I agree though, saddle pads aren't tack.

  14. Whew good, then I'm not a tack ho and thus don't have a problem, right?! My saddle pad collection is starting to creep back up into dangerous numbers. I am to the point where I spend several minutes before each ride agonizing over which pad I want to use that day.

  15. LMBO! Love this! Although, now I'm worried I might be a tack ho because I like to buy random interesting bits and pieces of tack even though I will never use them...

  16. OMG This post is epic! But seriously I have so many saddle pads, it is insane, and I always want more!!!!!

  18. also, wtf is a whistle bit? that's the funniest thing I've ever heard of. I can just imagine a horse whistling as it trots along...

  19. Well..I have a LOTTTTTTTTT of saddle pads. Maybe Ill do a series on my tack collections...but it might just make me sad to see all the $$ spent lmao

  20. Hypothetically speaking, if a person were to buy tack just to have it or because it was a good deal even though she probably won't use it would they be considered a Tack ho? Would 9 saddles, 27 bits, 12.5 bridles, 8 western head stalls, 6 western show halters, boots in every color of the rainbow, and oodles of breast collars make someone fall under the category of a Tack ho? I mean this is all hypothetical of course... I mean only a crazy person would have that much tack for 3 horses right? *uncomfortable laugh* And I mean a LOT of it was passed down from family members that used to breed and show arabians, and I MIGHT have an arabian one day for some reason so getting rid of the stuff we already have would be silly right? I mean the person I was hypothetically speaking for, clearly...
