#plzshareunicornmagic RESULTS!!!

Edit: I intentionally leave world events out of the goings on for this blog. That said, last night's tragedy hits way too close to home for me. There is never a right thing to say or a best way to grieve.

I love me some fail photos and when Topline Leather offered to do a giveaway, it was the obvious contest choice.

CONTEST TIME

Y'all know Topline Leather as the supplier of some of my most luxe equine tiaras. I have (of course) ordered Zoe her own custom piece, but in the interim, something fun happened.
SPERKLZZZ
SHE GOT UNICORN BITS.

Ok, full confession, these came on the radar back when I still had C and I was SUPPOSED to get a cool one to review and then do a sweet-ass giveaway. Buuuuuut in the intervening time, I got a Zoecorn who of course can't wear normal horse sizes.

Which means no unicorn bit for me.

But y'all still get a chance to win a 135mm (basically 5") loose ring or eggbutt snaffle unicorn bit!

action shot!

EVENTING BINGO BITCHES

Cough. I'm not on tramadol. You're on tramadol. And something about your mom. BUT IM BLOGGING BITCHES. Ha!

Without any further ado, here is/are my entry(ies) to Emma's massively confusing but probably super awesome contest that I want to win. So please don't enter. Because this tack ho wants some sweet swag.

BINGO CARD B

I'm using my man C-Rage for this one because he is the ass kickingest jumpering horse I know.
just maybe not with a rider
C-Rage and I rolled in to our first recognized event together like NBD cuz we kick all the asses at all the sports. He unloaded and natural-horsemanshipped himself for a while outside my 4 horse head to head living quarters trailer that I pull with my giant ass semi with a sleeper cab for my driver/groom/pool boy. When C-Rage was good and ready, the pool boy tacked him up and we headed to dressage. I wasn't worrying about my ride time because I told the judge I'd get there when I was good and ready. We came down centerline in perfect and harmonious passage. Judge gave us an 8 on that. Then we did a legit capriole into our halt. I wasn't sure if that part was scored or not so we threw in a few more caprioles and a levade here and there to demonstrate how we'd win the dressage.

Which did. Win it. Score under 20. That one 8 on my centerline was the lowest score in the whole damn test.

We were doing training because of how good at eventing we are. I was more concerned with C-Rage practicing his school canter for our PSG debut the next weekend, so we got SO MANY TIME PENALTIES on xc, but they can't eliminate us for that. Foot perfect, they call rounds like mine.

Then stadium. I panicked a little because my pool boy overcooked my lunch and screwed with my pre-ride aroma therapy so I totally didn't ride the smallest fence on course. Ooops! Stop. Good news--I was so far ahead in my division of just me that I still totes won it.
how champions practice

Yeah.

BINGO CARD C

Our second event was less glorious.

Let's just say we jumped out of the dressage ring after the salute, felt our way through stadium but somehow only had one rail, then chipped to the drop into water on xc and I went swimming. Good thing they gave out ribbons for showing up.
#nailedit

Yup. That's bingo. Or at least. I think it is.

Make Show Clothes Great Again CONTEST

We all know I think "horse show clothes" are beyond ridiculous. But then Andrea posted this picture of the sweet Pikuer coat she snagged for a song and I thought "that is the coolest thing I have ever seen someone do in a show coat".
SWAGGER

And then 10 seconds later "I CAN DO SOMETHING COOLER".

So I promptly called up Alyssa and Lindsey and we did this:

i had to actually growl to make this face
so metal it hurts
hair band style
The occasion? Thursday.
situation normal
But why should we have all the fun? WE SHOULDN'T. The obvious solution to this is a sweet contest with an awesome prize.

Show me, people of the internet: what is the most awesome thing you can do in a show coat?

Here are a couple guidelines:

1) You must utilize a show coat in your picture or video. You do not have to own the coat. If you can't borrow one, you can certainly improvise one, but it has to be very out of place and dorky and preferably make you look like a penguin.

2) GO NUTS. Run a spartan race. Ride backwards. Pose with goats. Be a pop star. Make a music video. Find a way to make your show coat fun and cool and enormously dorky. The only real rule is that you can't submit a photo of you actually showing a horse in the coat.

Submit your media entry (photo, video, gif, whatever) via instagram #sprinklerbandits and tag me @sprinklerbandits (to make sure i find you) or email it to me at SprinklerBandits@gmail.com.Entries are open now through 4/25 at midnight, which gives you two full weekends to get this figured out.
#makeshowcoatsgreatagain
OH AND THERE'S A PRIZE

Beka at Straight Shot Metal Smashing generously agreed to sponsor this contest. Winner gets a bridle charm and a bracelet custom made by Beka!!

Impress me, people of the internet.

#FAIL CONTEST RESULTS

FAIR WARNING: empty your mouth, then proceed at your own risk. I take no responsibility for spewed drinks and/or ruined keyboards and/or bewildered coworkers.

Well first off, thanks y'all for making this contest ABSOLUTELY IMPOSSIBLE to judge. There would have been much smashing of heads into desks if we hadn't been rolling on the ground laughing so hard.

Before I announce the winner, I'm going to go ahead and list our top finalists here. If you want to see more (and you should, just picking finalists was RIDICULOUS), look on instagram under the #sprinklerbandits. Pro tip: don't put anything in your mouth when you click over there either.

Ok CONGRATULATIONS FINALISTS:

Haha. Wow. Yeah. I totally did not anticipate the number or quality of entries submitted. I also completely forgot about "modern technology" and "motion pictures", which, omg.

I laughed. I cried (from laughing). I conferred with my fellow judges. We let it marinate for a few days and decided that if one didn't stand out after that, we'd just draw from a hat.

But there was one entry I couldn't get out of my head:

Congratulations Emily at The Exquisite Equine!! Please contact me to collect your prize.

Share Your Fail Contest!

Despite a strangely-persistent rumor to the contrary, Courage and I fail A LOT. At all the things. I think I do a pretty good job documenting that via social media, and Alyssa is the queen of capturing our greatest fails in images.
not wearing boots

not turning right
not doing ground poles
still not doing poles

not trotting by the wall

just not

definitely not

who can forget this particular not?
not how you jump oxers
not this either
But why should I have all the fun? I SHOULDN'T. I should have more. So. Starting today, I'm running a social media fail contest. Here's how to enter:

1) Post your favorite fail photo on instagram, hashtag it #sprinklerbandits and tag me (@sprinklerbandits). Include the text: "SprinklerBandits Blog fail contest" (or whatever I write up and post on the image)(this image is hopefully already up, but if not, it will be shortly. Check my account.)

2) If you don't have instagram (no judging--I don't twitter), just email me the picture via the blog email (sprinklerbandits at gmail dot com).

All submissions due by 3/18/16 at midnight with the winner announced 3/21/16.

Winner of what, you ask? OH YEAH. I HAVE A PRIZE.

Alyssa is not only the queen of photography, but also of hilarious custom cartoon drawing. Winner receives one (1) custom cartoon headshot drawing of the horse of their choice. Winner will be chosen by the mighty ruling force of the internet, aka Lindsey, Alyssa, and I will eat delicious food, laugh hysterically, and pick one submission. In case you want to know who to bribe.

ARE YOU EXCITED IM SO EXCITED

Oh yes: I have one super obvious rule: The photo must either be taken by you or of you and used with the full consent of the photographer or model. NO STEALING.

CONTEST RESULTS HO BOY

He is the best at modeling browbands
WE HAVE A WINNER!!!

In the interests of clarity and fairness, I will explain exactly how I come to a result in a contest.

1) I compile a spreadsheet of all entrants in order of their comments on the contest post. I try to file them by user name but some of you apparently have similar names, so I differentiate as needed. See: Lauren Chestnut and Jessica Vet.

2) I go to random.org, which claims to choose random numbers based on atmospheric noise. I don't know if they do or not, but they allow me to put in a range of answers.

3) I hit the "Generate" button and find out that our winner is...

Woo woo party time and do a dance!!

Lauren, please contact me and I'll get you all set up. Thanks for playing everyone!

If you didn't win (like me), you can still check out all the pretty things on Dark Jewel Designs facebook page or look them up on Etsy

The 1,000th Post AKA CONTEST TME

Super excited for 1000 posts
It seems like possibly the nerdiest thing ever to have a blog about a strange niche topic with a whole 1000 posts, but here I am.

Rocking the nerdy.

Let's revisit the high points of five years of blogging and see how things have changed both in my horse life and through the blog. And then let's have a contest because I love contests and I can't ever seem to win them, but dammit, someone should. Read the end for details!

Ms Izzy learning to canter under saddle
I started this blog way back in June of 2009. I was newly married, in college, and I had a brand new horse of my very own. I was new to the horse blogging world, but I had kept a personal blog of sorts in highschool. I think that's now buried in the depths of the internet and I'm ok with it. Here's my first post ever on iamthesprinklerbandit: Starting with a little history

It's really funny to me to look back at these posts now. I don't feel or think or sound like the same person any more. My blog reads like it's written by a clueless college student and it was. This was back before I discovered the joys of pictures in every post or developed my voice and writing style. Blogging is a process, that's for sure.

This is how you jump with three broken bones
Let's zoom ahead a couple of years to June of 2011. I was still working with Izzy, but I was mostly on my own. I took the mare XC schooling with a local trainer and I came away with several broken bones (arm and jaw in a couple places), despite my initial optimisim on the blog: We Conquer XC

This is a fascinating post for me to read. The whole era had me sort of juxtaposed between a lack luster junior career and finding my way as an adult ammy. I loved that mare and I believed the best about her, even though looking back I know that she was absolutely toxic for me. My voice as a blogger has definitely developed and I'm loving the incorporation of pictures, if not my position in any of those pictures. Win some, lose some.

Only the handsomest horse that ever was
2012 brought me to a more training-focused situation and more importantly, to the old man horse who would completely rock the very foundations of my world. Out with Izzy, in with Cuna and onward to my very favorite moments of the Sprinklerbandits blog! Here's the post where I finally accepted what was probably obvious to everyone in my life, from my husband to the clerk at the grocery store: Crossing the Rubicon

I was still apologizing and making excuses for Izzy at that point. I wanted it to work SO FREAKING BAD and it just wouldn't and I couldn't see it. In the post, I say it's because she wasn't a forward horse, but that's really not the case.

We both loved every single minute
Izzy had my number big time and Izzy dialed it EVERY SINGLE DAY. I was scared shitless and I only sort of knew it. This is why I ride you if you have a horse in the same place--I have been there and I know how it feels, but I also know how liberating and awesome and amazing every day can be if you have the right horse for you instead. /soapbox

Cuna completely changed me, not only as a rider, but also as a person. In terms of the blog, I found my confidence and my voice. It's amazing how the posts practically write themselves when you love your horse and it's even more amazing how people respond when you are really, truly happy. One of my favorite legacies of Cuna is the other bloggers he inspired to take that next step and end toxic relationships because we gave them hope for something better.

2013 brought a lot of heartbreak and a little joy. I think most of you have been along for the ride, but for those that are new to the blog, it wasn't pretty. Cuna had to step down from jumping to flat work and from flat work to retirement and even then I couldn't keep him comfortable. It was an absolutely horrific process that I really don't like to talk about right now. I wrote a post about the retirement: Towards Healing

I was overwhelmed by the outpouring of support from the blog community and I was thankful for each and every one of the comments I received from people who knew the same pain and wanted to be there for me in some way. Cuna touched a lot of lives in a lot of ways and I'm not the only one who misses him.

The best at putting pieces back together
I'm going to editorialize again though and say that if you have a friend going through that sort of horsey hardship, be kind and loving and supportive, but please also do them the honor of assuming they are taking care of their horse. Constant inferences that a grief stricken person just isn't trying hard enough are straight-up cruel. /soapbox #2

2013 also brought the little bay horse into my life that we all know and love. Courage ushered in another era for the SprinklerBandits blog. The only reason  can work with him is because of all the things my old man horse taught me.

It feels like redemption. I'm getting another chance to work on things I screwed up with Izzy and Courage is a really cool guy who isn't trying to kill me. Win win. Courage was introduced in: The Road Goes Ever On and On

2014 has been something of an unparalleled shit show on every possible level of life so far. That said, Courage has been my constant. t's a long process for both of us, but he's gone from being the back up to my #1, which I talk about here: Bonding or It Doesn't All Happen At Once

Blogging has really been a fun process for me. started it as a way to connect with people about my equine journey so I would annoy my husband less. While it certainly does that, I have really loved my ability to track my progress both in training and as a person. I have made some great friends and had good times.

So thank you, readers, for 5 great years and sticking it out for 1000 sometimes great, sometimes average, and frequently scattered posts. I love readers and comments and feedback and I love meeting all of you. If you don't already blog, I'd strongly encourage you to start. It is such a great experience to share your equine journey with friends to encourage you on the sad days and applaud on the happy ones.

Loving those upgraded beads!!
ANNNNNNND CONTEST
To honor the history of SprinklerBandits, I want to give away one of my all-time favorite products: a custom sparkle browband from Dark Jewel Designs. I love them and so should you!  The prize is one browband of the size/ color you choose. Amelia has graciously offered to include 3 sparkly strands for the browband PLUS NO CHARGE FOR BEAD UPGRADES. :-D.

God. Now I want to win.

To enter, just leave a comment on this post with your favorite blog post from Sprinklerbandits Blog and your email address (or preferred method to be contacted by) and I will do a random drawing one week from today. Entries close Sunday, August 24th at midnight.

Noted: it's enough to remember the content of a post or something. You do not have to provide the specific URL. And yes, you can totally use this post or the last one if you're like "screw this I just want a sparkle browband".

FRIDAY FUN OMG

He is the best at trotting like a hunk
My favorite Alyssa came out and took pictures the other day. She was going to ride another horse, but Courage was already tacked up and they get along famously.

I really need to do a full write up. GUYS I HAVE SO MANY PRETTY PICTURES I DON'T EVEN KNOW WHAT TO DO.

Let's just agree that Courage is in a really cool place, training-wise and I will write you a better wrap up soon. Like Monday.

Yup. Still best.
Anywho. As I said, Alyssa rode C-rage.

She has this totally awesome way of just riding freely forward without pulling and horses respond really well to it. Especially Courage. HE LOVES HER.

They were all w/t/c and jumping a baby grid and the little stink went better for her than he did for me, which I guess means I ought to work on some things.

Good friends don't stop you. They take pics.
And then we were hanging out in the middle of the arena waiting for Prisoner to finish up.

Courage looks at the epic sky
The little dude was all content and happy and mostly asleep and let's just agree that Alyssa is waaaaay braver and more balanced than me.

I so love that my horse can do this, even if I'm 100% sure I will never try it.

What I will try is entering Alyssa's sweet fly bonnet contest over at Four Mares, No Money. Custom bonnet! Fun piping! Easy entry! Closes today!!

Fun and Pictures

Ok, first things first. Y'all should go to Riley's blog and enter the amazing sweet contest. If you're poor like me from having two horses, guess what? You can make two entries! I've sent in my first entry, but need a suitable picture for the second. It's super fun and the prizes are incredible. Check it out!!

Adorable rockstar
Second things second: due to it apparently now being fall, Mr Courage debuted his fist blanket since I've owned him.

How can a snuggly warm horse not just make you happy? He was pefectly quiet about the whole thing and not the least bit concerned. I did halter him to put it on, since you just never know.

Now I know. Rockstar. As usual.

I have a list of blog posts to write this week (hello review time), but I just wanted to share some fun shots today.

We are trying out a new saddle and I am practicing jumping with my butt staying out of the saddle on the back side so that he can use his hind end effectively.

What can I say? Defensive habits die hard. Those of you who were around last fall remember that I was working on this same concept with Cuna before... well, the shit storm that was this year.

Why jump when you can trot?
Regardless, we are making progress and the little dude was great.

Also once I got out of the saddle, he got really bored of wee cross rails. He's totally got the idea of jumping now, so there is no funny wiggliness to the fence, but he wasn't impressed enough to do more than trot over them after the first try.

First time over the wee x
Onwards and upwards! This week I plan to move the jumps to new places in the arena and make the crossrails more impressive. Maybe we'll get really crazy and jump some tiny verticals if I can get my position under control and my stirrups short enough.

Sure is fun having things to work towards and seeing actual progress. I feel like we're squeezing as much in as possible before the weather totally nosedives. Everyone else loving fall?
